Refined Lime Seed Oil: Benefits, Properties and How to Formulate With It

    lime

Lime is one of those ingredients everyone thinks they know. Search for it and you'll find page after page about lime essential oil - the zesty, volatile oil expressed from the peel. But tucked inside the fruit is a different ingredient altogether: the seeds, which yield a lightweight, fast-absorbing carrier oil that deserves far more attention from formulators than it currently gets.

Refined Lime Seed Oil (INCI: Citrus Aurantifolia Seed Oil) is a fixed, non-volatile oil with a dry, non-greasy skin feel, next to no odour and a fatty acid profile that makes it a genuinely useful workhorse emollient - in facial and body care, hair and nail products, massage blends, soap and beyond. Here's what it is, what's in it, and how to get the best out of it in your formulations.

🍹 For a limited time: we're giving away a free 50ml bottle of Refined Lime Seed Oil with every order over £85 at INKY Ingredients - so you can put everything in this article to the test in your own formulations. No code needed; it's added automatically at checkout. Shop the range.

What is refined lime seed oil?

Refined lime seed oil is a fixed (carrier) oil obtained from the seeds of the lime fruit, Citrus aurantifolia, and then refined - a purification process involving degumming, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorisation. Refining strips out impurities, pigments and odour, leaving a clear to light yellow oil that is effectively odourless, with excellent batch-to-batch consistency and improved stability. That makes the refined grade particularly well suited to commercial formulation, where predictable colour, low odour and a clean spec sheet matter.

    At a glance:

    • INCI: Citrus Aurantifolia Seed Oil
    • Extraction: expeller pressed from lime seeds, then fully refined
    • Appearance: clear to light yellow oily liquid
    • Aroma: odourless - refining removes the aromatic compounds found in lime peel oil
    • Shelf life: 24 months
    • Skin feel: lightweight, fast-absorbing, non-greasy
    • Comedogenicity: low - considered non-comedogenic
    • Hazard status: not classified as hazardous

Lime seed oil vs lime essential oil: not the same thing

This distinction is worth being crystal clear on, because it changes how you formulate. Lime essential oil is a volatile aromatic oil from the fruit peel, used at fractions of a percent for fragrance - and the cold-pressed peel oil is well known for containing furocoumarins, which can make skin photosensitive. Lime seed oil is a triglyceride: a stable, non-volatile lipid used as the body of a formulation rather than its scent. It behaves like any other carrier oil - think grapeseed or kiwi seed - and the refined grade carries none of the punchy top notes (or the formulation caveats) of the peel oil. If you want lime's story in a product without building it around a phototoxicity warning, the seed oil is the smarter route.

    The chemistry: what's in it

Lime seed oil's usefulness comes down to a nicely balanced fatty acid profile, weighted towards linoleic acid:

    Fatty acid Type Typical range
    Linoleic acid (C18:2) Omega-6, polyunsaturated 30-43%
    Oleic acid (C18:1) Omega-9, monounsaturated 20-38%
    Palmitic acid (C16:0) Saturated 18-28%
    Linolenic acid (C18:3) Omega-3, polyunsaturated 4-10%
    Stearic acid (C18:0) Saturated 2-7%
    Arachidic acid (C20:0) Saturated <0.5%

Source: O&3/INKY specification for Lime Seed Oil, Refined (K0265).

For formulators, that profile tells you most of what you need to know. The high linoleic fraction is what gives the oil its dry, quick-absorbing touch and makes it a good fit for combination, oily and blemish-prone skin - linoleic-rich oils are widely used to support the skin's barrier lipids without leaving residue. The generous oleic fraction adds softness, slip and a more cushioned emolliency than very dry oils like grapeseed. And the meaningful saturated fraction (palmitic and stearic) lends the oil a touch more body and oxidative stability than ultra-polyunsaturated seed oils, while contributing to that smooth, conditioned after-feel. Naturally occurring antioxidant compounds round out the profile and help protect both the oil and the finished formulation.

Benefits for skin, hair and nails

In finished products, refined lime seed oil earns its place in four main ways. It moisturises and softens, replenishing lipids and helping skin hold onto water while supporting barrier function. It absorbs fast without greasiness, sinking in quickly and leaving a fresh, clean finish - the property our customers mention most. It supports a brighter, more even-looking complexion, improving texture and lending skin a healthy glow, with antioxidant content that helps defend against the environmental stressors associated with visible ageing. And it's gentle and versatile: non-comedogenic, mild and suitable across face, body, hair and nail applications.

How to formulate with refined lime seed oil

Treat it as a lightweight-to-mid-weight emollient that can carry a big share of your oil phase. As a general rule of thumb (the specification itself doesn't prescribe usage rates), it can be used at anywhere from a few percent up to 100% in anhydrous products; in emulsions, an inclusion of around 3-20% of the total formula is a common starting point depending on the richness you're after. Because the refined grade is odourless and pale, it won't fight your fragrance or throw off the colour of a white cream - a real advantage over stronger-smelling unrefined oils.

    Where it shines:

    • Facial oils and serums - use it as the fast-absorbing base of a blend, and pair it with richer oils (avocado, oat) or actives-carrying oils (rosehip, sea buckthorn) for balance. It blends beautifully with esters and silicone alternatives where a dry finish is the goal.
    • Light lotions, gel creams and aftersun - its quick absorption keeps emulsions feeling fresh rather than heavy; a natural fit for summer body care and post-sun products.
    • Hair and beard oils, leave-in treatments - adds shine, softness and manageability without weighing hair down; well suited to fine hair and lightweight scalp-friendly serums.
    • Nail and cuticle care - the classic pairing for this oil: cuticle balms, nail serums and soaks where fast penetration and a non-sticky finish are essential.
    • Massage and aromatherapy blends - a well-priced professional carrier with good slip that won't stain linens the way heavier, more coloured oils can, and a neutral base for diluting essential oils.
    • Lip balms, hand and foot creams - softens rough, dry areas while keeping the finished product from feeling waxy or greasy.
    • Soap, cleansing balms and beyond - as a triglyceride it saponifies, so it can bring a citrus-orchard story to cold-process soap; it also works in cleansing oils and balm-to-milk cleansers, and its low odour and light colour suit home and personal fragrance-led products such as body sprays and bath oils.

If you already work with refined kiwi seed oil or grapeseed oil, you'll find lime seed oil sits in the same lightweight, high-linoleic family - but with its own balance of slip and dry-down, and a story your customers haven't heard a hundred times before. That novelty matters: "lime seed oil" on an ingredients list invites a conversation, and it gives product developers a genuinely differentiated citrus angle that isn't just fragrance.

    Frequently asked questions

Is lime seed oil the same as lime essential oil?

No. Lime essential oil is a volatile, aromatic oil from the fruit peel, used in tiny amounts for fragrance. Lime seed oil is a fixed carrier oil pressed from the seeds - a stable triglyceride used as an emollient and base oil, with no scent of its own in the refined grade.

Is refined lime seed oil comedogenic?

It's considered non-comedogenic. Its high linoleic acid content and fast, residue-free absorption make it a popular choice for combination, oily and blemish-prone skin types.

    Is lime seed oil phototoxic?

Phototoxicity concerns around lime relate to furocoumarins in cold-pressed lime peel essential oil. Lime seed oil is a different material - a refined fixed oil from the seeds - and is not associated with those concerns. As with any ingredient, always review the supplier documentation for the specific grade you buy.

What does refined lime seed oil smell like?

Nothing, to all intents and purposes - the refined grade is specified as odourless, because refining removes the volatile aromatic compounds. If you want a lime scent in your finished product, that comes from your fragrance or essential oil blend; the seed oil gives you a clean, neutral base to build on.

How much should I use in a formulation?

The manufacturer's specification doesn't prescribe usage rates, but as general formulation practice it can be used from around 1% up to 100% in anhydrous products such as facial oils and balms. In emulsions, around 3-20% of the formula is a common starting range, adjusted for the skin feel you want.

    How should I store it?

Like any carrier oil: cool, dark and tightly sealed, away from heat and light. The refined grade has a specified shelf life of 24 months, and adding an antioxidant such as vitamin E to finished products will help extend the shelf life of your formulations further. Check the certificate of analysis supplied with your batch for its best-before date.

    Final thoughts

Refined lime seed oil is that rare thing: an ingredient with a familiar, likeable story and a technical profile to back it up. Light, fast-absorbing, odourless and balanced between linoleic softness and oleic cushion, it slots into almost any oil phase - and right now, it will slot itself into your basket for free on orders over £85.
